Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. I offer private and secure video sessions for anyone in California. This is a great way to get support from a place where you feel comfortable. You just need a good internet connection and a private space for our call.

What is EMDR therapy and how does it work?

EMDR is a therapy that helps people heal from hard past events. When something frightening happens, the memory can get stuck in your brain's alarm system. During EMDR we use gentle eye movements or tapping to help your brain file the memory in a safer place. The memory stays, but it no longer feels so painful or upsetting.

Will I have to relive my trauma?

No, the goal is never to make you relive a bad experience. EMDR is a very safe process. Before we work on any difficult memories, we spend time learning skills to help you stay calm and feel grounded. You are always in full control, and we will even create a "stop" signal you can use at any time. Your safety is my top priority.

What can I expect during and after an EMDR session?

During a session, we'll pick a specific memory to focus on. I will then guide you through sets of eye movements or tapping. After each set, I'll ask you what you notice. Your own brain does the healing.

After a session, your brain might keep processing things for a day or two. We will talk about ways to take care of yourself between our sessions.

How do I know if I'm ready for EMDR?

We decide that together, so you do not have to guess on your own. You're usually ready once you have skills to manage strong feelings without getting overwhelmed. Early sessions focus on building those skills and making sure you feel safe.

What kinds of issues can EMDR help with?

EMDR is best known for treating trauma (PTSD), but it also helps with other tough events. It can ease anxiety, fears, deep sadness after a loss, and low self-esteem that grows out of hard experiences.

What are your fees?

A 50-minute therapy session costs $160. I have a few spots available at a lower price for people with financial challenges. Please ask about this during our first call. Payment is due at each session.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, I am "in-network" with these plans for clients ages 16 to 64:

  • Optum
  • Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal
  • Healthnet Medi-Cal
  • Partnership

I do not accept Medicare. If you are 65 or older, you would pay for sessions directly.

What does "Out-of-Network" mean? How does a "superbill" work?

If I do not accept your insurance plan, it is called "out-of-network." This means you pay me for each session. I can then give you a special receipt called a "superbill." You can send this to your insurance company, and they may pay you back for a portion of the cost. It is a good idea to call your insurance company and ask about your "out-of-network benefits" for therapy.

What is a "Good Faith Estimate"?

A new law gives you the right to know the cost of care ahead of time. If you are not using insurance, I will give you a document called a "Good Faith Estimate." This paper shows the expected cost for your therapy sessions, so there are no surprises with billing.
